Fossil fuels such as petroleum and natural gas will continue
to mitigate our energy needs for years to come. Rather than
mandating unrealistic time frames for the elimination of
fossilfuels we need to continue the research and development
of renewable energy production and storage while identifying,
designing and building the infrastructure required to distribute
clean energy within our country.
1Of the total U.S. fossil fuel production in 2021, dry natural gas
accounted for 46%, the largest share. Crude oil accounted for
30%, coal for 15%, and natural gas plant liquids (NGPLs) for 9%.
We expect those shares to remain similar through 2023.

Careful integration of distributed generation and careful
deployment of utility-scale generation will be needed to
provide the mix of power and reliability that we require
for a healthy electric supply as renewables contribute an
increasingly larger share of our energy needs.
8Petroleum and natural gas are the most-used fuels in the United
States through 2050 (U.S. Energy Information Administration,
2020) (March 17, U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2022)
